Why does Buddhism encourage vegetarian food?
Why does Buddhism encourage vegetarian food? The most important reason should be: Buddhism does not approve of killing. People raise cattle, pigs, chickens, fish and other animals for appetite, then kill them and eat their meat. This kind of description is a bit creepy, but most people are either numb, or deliberately ignore and escape. Animals also have their lives. When they are slaughtered, they will also feel pain; although we did not kill them personally, but it is because there are people who eat animal meat so there are other people who raise, slaughter, and sell them. Buddhism teaches people to be compassionate and empathetic and try to think, if we were slaughtered today, how much pain would we suffer? It will not cause our death if we do not eat animal meat. Eating a vegetarian diet can not only reduce killing, it is also good for health.
In addition, Buddhism has the concept of reincarnation: after death, all beings will be reborn into another lives, and after those lives die, they will be reborn again and it will repeat again and again. The cause we made in the past life will become the result in the future life. This is called karma. When we eat the flesh of sentient beings, we not only destroy compassion and empathy, but also create causes that kill lives. In the future life, we will receive these effects–our body will often suffer from illness or natural disability. If we are reborn as animals, we may even receive the retribution of being slaughtered and eaten by the animals we eat (just reborn as humans).
Look at the wars in the world, where tens of thousands of people die at every turn. Isn’t it similar to that animals are slaughtered? The origin of war is that people have lost their compassion and empathy; Buddhist sutras believe that the killing of a large number of lives will lead to the consequences of future wars.
Eating vegetarian food will not only avoid killing life, it is also an environmentally friendly behavior that can reduce pollution to our planet, because raising so many livestock will increase carbon emissions. Moreover, vegetarian food can be delicious if cooked properly. So don't hesitate anymore! Stop eating meat can lead mankind to a better future.
