Let go of hatred and cultivate compassion

Modern society has entered the era that the Buddha said, the end of the Dharma. Human morality has been challenged unprecedentedly. People seem to be full of anger and resentment at any time. A small matter can provoke disputes between people, and no one is willing to sacrifice their own benefits; even a trivial dispute can trigger people's hatred and hostility, and no one is willing to give in.

The consequences of hatred are negative for society and individuals. From a social point of view, hatred can make society unstable. In severe cases, it can cause turmoil and war, and people cannot live a safe and secure life. From a personal point of view, hatred makes people lose their minds and lose their inner peace. When a person has hatred in his heart, that kind of unhappiness is actually a kind of pain. Staying in this state of mind for a long time can also have a bad effect on health.

Why do people have hatred? What is the root of hatred? From the point of view of Buddhism, hatred stems from the greed of self. What is the greed of ego? When others violate us, or our interests are destroyed by others, hatred arises. To put it plainly, when the actions of others threaten oneself or one's own interests, because people have a strong sense of protection for themselves, they will hate those who hurt or threaten them.

Such protection of oneself may be human instinct, but it is also because of this instinct—the greed of self, so people are always in pain. Look at those who are full of hatred, and their hearts are always angry; how can they be happy? Of course, not everyone is a sage, it is unrealistic to ask all people to give up their greed for self and not to protect themselves. But if everyone can understand the root cause of hatred and revise the hatred mentality bit by bit, it will have a positive effect on society and individuals.

Cultivating compassion can reduce hatred. Let go of the attachment of self, don’t just think about yourself when encountering things, don’t take yourself too seriously, try to learn to look at things from the perspective of others, and take the interests of others into account, then we can gradually develop our compassion Heart, reduce hatred. The so-called bodhisattva path in Buddhism refers to the act of self-interest and altruism at the same time, and the act of wishing to make all sentient beings get relief. The practice of the bodhisattva way can be said to be a kind of brilliance of human nature.

The attitude of compassion comes from our own experience of suffering; when we understand the root of all the suffering in the world and why we have suffering, then we can expand the idea to have the compassion of that all sentient beings in the world are living in pain and we wish to make all sentient beings get away from pain and get happiness through our actions.

Compassion can not only bring peace to society, but also make our individual hearts calm and peaceful. When our hearts are full of anger, compassion can calm our hearts quickly. Furthermore, the establishment of compassion is also a necessary condition for becoming a Buddha. Compassion has so many benefits, why not try it now?
